A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory. Irish septs and clans that are related often belong to even larger groups, sometimes called tribes.
The earliest reference to the name occurs in a Justiciary Roll in the year 1313 dealing with County Limerick . In the birth registrations of 1865 and 1866, 70 births of the name were registered, 39 in Clare and South Galway , 10 in Limerick , 8 in Waterford and 6 in Wexford. In Griffith's Evaluation of the nineteenth century the name was popular in Wexford and Waterford and the current voters list in County Clare shows they are numerous there.
The Miskell coat of arms came into existence centuries ago. The process of creating coats of arms (also often called family crests) began in the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this. The new art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms, including all Miskell descendants.
