Origin of the Name McMonagle



The McMonagle family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Variants of McMonagle include McMunagle, McMenigall, McMonigle, McMonegal and McMonigal. This name in Irish is MacMaongail and the latter variants are the anglicized forms of this. This sept came from Donegal.

Taken from the personal name 'Maonghal', composed of the elements 'maoin', meaning 'wealth' and 'gal', menaing 'valour'. Their territory was most of County Donegal and the city of Derry. They appear in the County Donegal Hearth Money Rolls of 1665 as O'Monigal and one of the family was considered 'the doyen of Ulster journalists' worthy of a place in the Dictionary of Irish Biography. He was Alexander MacMonagle, 1848-1919.
