The origin of the name Hartley was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. Meaning 'of Hartley', Hartley is a locational name from the parishes in the diocese of Rochester and Winchester. This name is of Anglo-Saxon descent spreading to the Celtic countries of Ireland , Scotland , and Wales in early times and is found in many mediaeval manuscripts throughout the above islands. Examples of such are a Ricardus de Hertlay who was recorded in the 'Poll Tax' of the West Riding of Yorkshire, England , in the Year 1379, and a Brian de Hertheley, from County Lincolnshire, who was recorded in the 'Hundred Rolls' in the Year 1273. In Ireland the name Hartley can be of immigrant origin, especially in Ulster Province but can also be derived from the native Gaelic O'hArtghaile sept of County Wexford.
The Hartley coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.
