Origin of the Name McClure



The McClure family history was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives.
Over the centuries Surnames developed a wide number of variants. Different spellings of the same name can be traced back to an original root. Additionally when a bearer of a name emigrated it was not uncommon that their original name would be incorrectly transcribed in the record books at their new location. Surnames were also often altered over the years based on how they sounded phonetically and depending on the prevailing political conditions it may have been advantageous to change a name from one language to another.
Variants of the name McClure
include Maclure, Maccloor and Mcleur. This name is from Scotland and means 'son of Odhar's servant'. This is a popular Galloway surname and in ancient records we find John McLur and Robert MacLure were followers of the Earl of Casailis, and were respited for murder in the year 1526. A Tho Maklure was a sergeant of assize in Carrick in the year 1532. A branch of the family migrated to Ulster and they appear frequently in the Hearth Money Rolls for County Armagh and County Monaghan in the year 1660. Sir Robert John Mesurier MacClure, 1807-1873, was a pioneer arctic explorer, he being born in Wexford. Another part of the family settled in Tipperary in the nineteenth century where they can still be found to this very day.
The McClure coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.
