Origin of the Name Carmichael

The origin of the name Carmichael was found in the allfamilycrests.com archives. The name Carmichael is taken from the lands and Barony of Carmichael in Lanarkshire, Scotland . The lands have long been in the possession of the Carmichaels, the first of whom appears in records as a Robert de Carmitely who resigned all patronage of the Church of Glegern, now Cleghorn, in 1220, and about 1250 had a right of Lordship in the land of Cleghorn. Sir John de Carmychell had lands of Carmychell in the fourteenth century, from William, Earl of Douglas. John Carmichael became Bishop of Orleans in recognition of the great services rendered in France by the Scots. He was known in French History as Jean de Saint Michel, and in 1429 he founded in his Cathederal Church a Messe ecossaise for his countrymen slain at Verneuil. In Ireland Carmichael is a Sept of the Scottish clan Stewart, and is found mostly in Ulster Province.
