Origin of the Name Boyle-Scotland

The Scottish Boyles hail from Ayrshire and are ultimately descended from the Norman de Beauvilles who arrived into England after the 1066 William the Conqueror invasion. The Scottish families aided Alexander III in repelling the Viking invaders in the year 1263 at the Battle of Largs after which the lands of Kelburn were re-granted to them. The Boyles fought at the Battle of Bannockburn in the year 1314 in support of Robert I of Scotland. They also fought at Battle of Sauchieburn in the year 1488, losing their lands but later having them restored by James IV. Their history is one of a clan that suffered badly through the centuries for their allegiances. Kelburn Castle at Fairlie, North Ayrshire, has remained the ancestral family home of the Boyles since the thirteenth century.
