Origin of the Name Blount

This is a Norman name common in England and Normandy and means 'blonde' or 'fair haired'. This name is found in many mediaeval manuscripts in Scotland and examples of such are Hugh de Abirbuthenoth, who gifted the church of Garuoch to the monastery of Arbroath in 1292 and who was commonly designated Hugo Blundus or Le Blond because of the flaxen colour of his hair. Before 1200 Rodbert Blundus witnessed a charter by Roger de Quenci. Like their Irish Kinsmen many Scots were forced to seek emigration after the 1745 Rebellion and above all clearances of whole populations by landlords during the nineteenth century. In Ireland this name was numerous in the Middle Ages but in modern times is quite seldom found. The original form of the name was 'le Blount' and this was often changed to the name White by translation.
